Front Street Pedestrian Mall

Giving the block back to the people. Creating greater public space at in the heart of downtown.

The chaos of streets in downtown Missoula is inching closer and closer to a solve, but have they missed another solution? If we really want people to care, then we must reduce the tangle of street options for their vehicles. It’s about the people.

Overview

Explained in a couple social slides:

Approach

Test out the idea with a basic resurfacing of the street. Adding protective bollards at the each end and potted plants throughout. Mix in seating in the form of benches and tables with chairs. *There would be a different colored portion painted for vehicles needing to enter the existing garage.

Streets Layout

Utilize Main St. returning to a two way and a main route to Higgins or across downtown.

Consolidated Bike Lane (Suggestion)

Front St. becomes two-way as well and due to its width parking can be gained along the north side. It all changes to a angled nose in spots with a two-way park path on the other side of the street. This simplifies the path and creates added safety for cyclists.

Big Picture

Zooming out helps show how traffic flow makes more sense, especially once other elements of the SAM project are completed. Main St will become the primary secondary to Broadway, which just makes sense. The rest of Front will serve as the slower local traffic street, like the Front St. Loop.
